چکیده

Sub-threshold operation is an efficient solution for ultra low power applications. However, it is very sensitive to process variability which can impact the robustness and effective performance of the circuit. On the other hand this sensitivity decreases as we move towards near-threshold operation. In this paper, the impact of variability on sub-threshold and near-threshold circuit performance is investigated through analytical modeling and circuit simulation in a 65 nm industrial low power CMOS process. We show that variability moves the effective minimum energy point towards the near threshold region. Thus, we demonstrate that when variability is taken into account, a complete model that includes the near threshold (moderate inversion) region is necessary in order to correctly model circuit performance around the minimum energy point. Finally, we present the resulting speed-consumption trade-off in a variability-aware analysis of sub-threshold and near-threshold operation.

Towards modular, scalable and optimal design of transcriptional logic systems

Living organisms can perform computations through various mechanisms. Understanding the limitations of these computations is not only of practical relevance (for example in the context of synthetic biology) but will most of all provide new insights into the design principles of living systems. This thesis investigates the conditions under which genes can perform logical computations and how thi...

Area Versus Speed Trade-off Analysis of a WiMAX Deinterleaver Circuit Design

Trade-off is one of the main design parameters in the field of electronic circuit design. Whereas smaller electronics devices which use less hardware due to techniques like hardware multiplexing or due to smaller devices created due to techniques developed by nanotechnology and MEMS, are more appealing, a trade-off between area, power and speed is inevitable. This paper analyses the trade-off i...

High-Speed Low-Power MCML Nanometer Circuits with Near-Threshold Computing

In this paper, the standard cells of the high-speed low-power MCML circuits with near-threshold computing are developed. The basic MCML standard cells include buffer/inverter, AND/NAND, XOR/XNOR, multiplexer, and full adder. The layout, abstract design and standard-cell characters of near-threshold MCML basic cells are described at a NCSU FreePDK 45nm technology. The 2-bit multiplier is verifie...

A contention-free domino logic for scaled-down CMOS technologies with ultra low threshold voltages

A new contention-free Domino logic (CF-Domino) that is especially suited for low threshold voltage (LVT) is reported. Its superior noise margin and speed over conventional Domino circuits for LVTs are demonstrated using HSPICE simulations and a 0.25pm CMOS technology with a supply voltage of 2.5V. The impacts of the new technique on dynamic and leakage powers and area are also presented. Q . an...
